Mammoth growth plans in West Valley, its farthest reaches and ‘cities of the future’ moving from blueprints and closer to reality

Developers, builders and transportation planners have long plotted big growth plans in the far West Valley west of Buckeye and the outer reaches of the Phoenix suburbs.

Interstate 11, cities of the future developments at Douglas Ranch and on land owned by Microsoft founder Bill Gates are all on the drawing board.

Goodyear city manager says city’s future is ‘bright’

Looking back at the year she’s spent as Goodyear city manager, Julie Arendall sees her most important achievement as something decidedly not political.

It’s meeting residents and collaborating with her staff.

“I just love my job, the mayor, the council, the leadership team and all of the staff,” Arendall said. “I try to get out to every possible event to meet our residents, to meet our developers and meet our business partners.”

Throughout these meet and greets, Arendall learned what most already know: “the future is incredibly bright for the city of Goodyear.” Read more

Goodyear Microsoft Technology Center

The Goodyear City Council unanimously approved a development agreement that will allow Microsoft to begin construction on two buildings in a planned “five-building technology center.”

The tech giant owns 279 acres south of Interstate 10 near the Phoenix Goodyear Airport.

“We’re very excited and very proud,” Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord said after Monday’s vote. “This is a real big move for us.”

Lord told The Arizona Republic that she’s hopeful that Microsoft’s announcement will bring more tech companies to the suburb that has steadily expanded its industry in recent years.

Thoughtfully planned by renowned land planning and architectural firm Swaback Partners, the village will encompass neighborhoods designed to offer fresh architectural styles in a hillside setting, surrounded by parks, trails, and community amenities. Slated to open in in spring 2019, Lucero will be the first new area of the master-planned community to debut since 2007, when the village known as Montecito opened.
